Pastel on Velour or Suede Paper with Rae Andrews

    Date Saturday March 26th 9.30-4pm

Cost:  $65 Workshop duration will be 6.5  hours including lunch break.

**** If you pay cash, $50

    Where: Make checks out to

     Rae Gillian. 3901 Culebra Circle

    Austin, Texas 78734

    512 266 0833

In the morning demo Rae will demonstrate her technique for drawing the figure on velour paper. Midday (after a lunch break) she will demonstrate the abstract underlay technique.

    Materials to bring.

    1) Velour paper (you can get this at Asel's.)

Suede board which is matt board, you can get at some framers, they often have off cuts. Rae will have a few of these for sale at $7 each (20 x 16")

*** Rae suggests you try both surfaces at least once, they are slightly different and both give amazing results.

    2) Pastels, bring what you have, hard and soft and some in between medium pastels. (Rae uses Schmincke, Rembrandt, Art Spectrum, Sennelier and Prismacolor)

This surface may not 'like' some pastels, the softer ones work well however, one cannot use only soft pastels, there must be a few harder ones in the first layers, such as Prismacolor pastels, which are quite hard and rembrandt (mid range hardness)

    3) White/black Charcoal pencil (General brand makes these) or pastel pencil.

** If you have pastel pencils, bring them also, although these are not absolutely necessary.

    4) Drawing board and clips, a piece of foamcore will do for this.

    5) Easel (Table or standard)

    6) Soft eraser ( Rae uses a pen eraser (also form Asel's)

    7) Large beach towel or drop cloth

    8) Pencil sharpener for pastel pencils if you are using them, or a box cutter tool.

    9) Rag and wetwipes

    10) Tracing paper

    11) Photo reference of landscape, animal, figures, florals, still life, virtually all subject matter will work.

I think that is all folks, please come along, this will be a great day.

Space is limited, and it will be first in first served.

    ** Two places left.

This workshop will cover basic commands with P/Shop, and enable you as the artist, to make adjustments to your paintings the easy way. The workshop will be small, only 4 or 5 people so first in first served.

I use P/Shop all the time in my art, it is one of if not the most, sophisticated programs for graphics and photo adjustment there is. If you do not cover the basics with this program, and explore it, you will not get the full benefit of it.

I do not profess to know it all, but I have used this program for over 15 years now and have learned a lot I want to pass on to you.

So here is what our day will cover..

    1) we will look at some basic commands/tools and how they can be used  to help the artist.

There are so many tools in P/Shop, which can be very confusing for the novice.
Among other tools, I will show you color correction and how to size your art for a good printout.
How to transfer elements from one photo/painting to another.
I will also go over the process of resizing a jpg for competition entries of your art.

    2) we will see how these tools will help us in our art.

***Say for instance you wanted to isolate a part of your painting which has not been going right for you. We all know how that goes don't we?

Anyway, once you get a photo of your work into P/Shop, you can then begin to adjust colors and size of certain areas. Not to mention you can play with the  composition of your painting as well.

A handy practice enabling you to do your 'mess ups' before actually ruining your painting

    3) we will make a brochure/flyer or business card for our art.

If time permits in the second half of the workshop we will all design a flyer or brochure showing prospective clients the depth of your talents. These flyers are very handy for galleries as well, who  like to see a well presented bio page when interviewing a new artist.

So if you think you might be interested in this day of fun and learning, let me know asap please.

    Date of workshop:
    11/27/10 (Saturday)

    Cost of workshop:
    $60

    Hours:
    9.30am - 4pm

Lunch not included so please bring your own.
Teas and coffee and cookies included.

***You must have Photoshop  in your laptop already to use please, if not you can also use P/Shop Elements however be warned that some of the tools and commands may be different although very similar.

If you have any questions on this, please call Rae at:

    512 2660833

    or e/mail Rae at:

Thanks everyone, I hope you will come along,

    Okay, now onto the workshops..
First up, is a watercolor workshop on August  19th.
In this fun workshop you will learn a loose and spontaneous watercolor technique .

Flowers, still life, figures, shells, underwater marine life could all be subjects suited to this technique. You will work from photographs.

Rae will show you how she divides her backgrounds and plays with shapes and geometry  enveloping and complimenting the subject to achieve a balanced realistic/abstraction result.
It's a lot of fun, and the student will learn about design as well as technique.
     ......................................................................................................................

Workshop 2..August 21st .. please see general details on times etc as  for the above workshop.
Cost $65 for the day now including materials.

This is a Pastel Workshop, using pastels in a less formal way, with ribbons of color as a backdrop, into and over which, the subject is developed.

The substrate will be velour paper (purchased at Asels Art Supplies, a captivating surface for the pastelist.

The subject for this one could be anything the student desires, still life, figurative, cityscape, trees, even landscape to name a few.

Don't be shy with this one, this is a wonderfully freeing technique for those pastel artists stuck in a rut.

More workshops for the next few months will follow.
I would love to see you soon,
    Happy painting everyone
    Rae
