"The Scent of Sea and Pine"

This painting is of one of my favorite places here in the UK. 

Holkham Pines are on the North Norfolk coast in England,

a beautiful area where vast expansive beaches and

sand dunes are fringed by an ancient pine woodland.

As the title suggests, the unique heady aromas of the sea

and pines are complemented by a stillness and quite here,

that make it a serene and magical place to walk. I strove to capture

this special atmosphere, with the twisted tree trunks and protruding

roots adding interest, and the muted and dappled light over the soft sand,

which was a challenge I thought I met particularly well.

This painting was awarded Outstanding Pastel in the 

FASO Boldbrush competition in 2025.

The Austin Pastel Society is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1998 by a group of Austin artists active in the soft pastel medium. Artists, from beginners to professionals, benefit from the many opportunities provided by APS to learn about materials and techniques and to grow in their abilities by observing demonstrations at monthly meetings, participating in hands-on workshops led by nationally recognized instructors and by attending other APS events. Members may participate in juried and open exhibitions of their work at locations throughout the area.
